ACM Chapter Member News

December 12, 2012

Welcome to the December 2012 edition of ACM Chapter Member News
Chapters are the "local neighborhoods" of ACM. Our Professional and Student chapters worldwide serve as nodes of activity for ACM members and the computing community at large, offering seminars, lectures, and the opportunity to meet peers and experts in many fields of interest. With over 750 active chapters worldwide, we would like to take the time now to connect with all of you, and bring you a few of the ACM Highlights.

ACM Chapters to be de-chartered

ACM is considering the de-charter of certain chapters due to inactivity. Please be sure to check the following link to see if your chapter is there!

Members interested in revitalizing their chapters should ACM will terminate the chapters listed after 90 days unless interested volunteers express a desire to reactivate their chapter by preparing acceptable revitalization plans.

ACM Chapter Spotlight

This past October, the Bogota ACM SIGGRAPH Chapter held it's annual conference in Colombia. It was a great success with more than 820 attendees from around the country, and around the world! During the three day day conference, an outstanding 18 speakers shared their knowledge in both industry and academic talks that covered diverse areas of animation production and computer graphics research. Bogata ACM SIGGRAPH Chapter has been active since 2007 and has been making active contributions to both the ACM and SIGGRAPH community since.

Prediction-Serving Systems

ACM Queue’s “Research for Practice” is your number one resource for keeping up with emerging developments in the world of theory and applying them to the challenges you face on a daily basis. In this installment, Dan Crankshaw and Joey Gonzalez provide an overview of machine learning server systems. What happens when we wish to actually deploy a machine learning model to production, and how do we serve predictions with high accuracy and high computational efficiency? Dan and Joey’s curated research selection presents cutting-edge techniques spanning database-level integration, video processing, and prediction middleware. Given the explosion of interest in machine learning and its increasing impact on seemingly every application vertical, it's possible that systems such as these will become as commonplace as relational databases are today.

Lifelong Learning

ACM offers lifelong learning resources including online books from Safari, online courses from Skillsoft, webinars on the hottest topics in computing and IT, and more.
